 Most would agree that organic food is better for human consumption, that is to say it is better for your body. However, that may not always be the case.
 
    First, I'd like to tell you little story. I was at the local farmers market, and I inquired with the vendor about their growing methods.
    They told me they didn't use any pesticides, and that everything was naturally grown, and therefore it was better for me. Okay so, maybe it is and maybe it isn't, and I think we should discuss this.
    You see, just because someone doesn't use fertilizer, pesticide, or other strategies, or food processing doesn't necessarily mean that that organically grown food in someone's garden is safe to eat. Purely grown organic food might have bacteria, viruses, or pathogens which have not been killed, that could make you sick, or cause you to have a health issue.
    Further, I did comment with this vendor about the size of the fruit and vegetables they were selling, as they are not as large or as beautiful as those in the store.
    They explained to me that this was because they were organically grown, and I was buying environmentally friendly produce from them, and therefore it was worth paying double the price.
     Okay so, this brings up another point. If the produce is smaller, and it takes more acres to grow without the modern farming techniques, then in reality if all the produce around the world was organically grown, we wouldn't have enough left over to send to starving Africans. 
     In that case people would die.
     Next, it would take more energy to grow everything organically, and we would have lower crop yields, therefore have to plant on more acres, use more water, and that is not necessarily good for the environment. 
    Right now there is a big debate about the fortifying of foods and the processing of foods, or even giving genetically modified foods to those who are starving in Africa.
     If we fortify the foods with vitamins and essential minerals, there will be less disease, and fewer health issues, meaning fewer people will die.
     Yet, the debate amongst the environmentalists rages on - that we shouldn't be sending the genetically modified foods to those who are starving. 
     Okay, but would you rather they eat plastic, dirt, or nothing at all? We have the chance to feed the world, to prevent starvation, to increase crop yields to deal with the increasing population now over 7 billion, and yet, there seems to be a nonsensical debate bathed in hypocrisy every time we try to feed those who need the food the most. 
     Therefore, I ask that you please think about this and consider it.

       The new study by the Organic Monitor named The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics & Emerging Trends 2010 reported that the global organic sales reached $50.9 billion in 2008, double the $25 billion recorded in 2003.
       Projected growth is between 20 and 30 percents, worldwide.
      The organic food trend, which started in the 70s as a reaction to widespread use of agrochemicals in food production is now a major player in the food production and is not just a niche any more. 
      The trend encompasses consumers, agricultural producers, food distributors, farmers, and affects even the financial market.
     Organic agriculture started as local phenomena, people growing food mostly for themselves and for their neighbors.
     This trend grew into a growing popularity of small local producers, which could produce healthy, fresh food on a small scale for a reasonable price.
     A lot has changed since. In 2008, land farmed organically in the world totaled 35 million hectares. 
     This acreage was farmed by 1.4 million producers from 154 countries.

     The majority - 22 million hectares - were grassland. More than 8.2 million hectares were used for cropland. Almost 31 million hectares that are organic are wild collection areas and land for bee keeping.

    Spire Research and Consulting together with the S.P. Joint Center of Management, Singapore, published the results of their study, which found that, from the small market in 2002 worth just about S $10,000, organic market grew to S$68 million in 2008. 
    This growth trend is expected to continue at the rate of 20 to 30 percent per year.
    Although the price of organic food in Singapore is about 112 percents higher than the price of the same produce grown traditionally, this did not deter the loyal organic shoppers. When interviewed, they said that the economic crisis did not force them to change their habits.
     Their reason for choosing organic food were the same as in the rest of the world: health safety, superior taste, environmental concern and fashion consciousness.
    The study found that the organic market in Singapore still consists of high and middle income locals and expatriates, and in order to continue growing needs to reach the mass market.

Is Organic Food Really Better?


      Every day organic food is becoming more and more popular... but why is this? It probably has a lot to do with the media constantly feeding us with news of cows being plumped up to produce more milk, which in turn makes them sick, and then they are treated with antibiotics which inevitably is present in the milk that we pick up from the local grocery store.
      We also hear about chickens where the coops are so small that they barely have room to stand and again are fed antibiotics which are present in the eggs that we eat, so from a health perspective as well as a humane perspective, a lot of us are increasingly jumping on the 'organic train'. Some people also tend to claim that organic foods also taste better than ordinary food... so is all of this true? Is it really healthier? Is it really tastier?
     First of all - What is organic food? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (RPA), 'organic' foods are defined as foods which are not treated with any pesticides, sewage sludge, ionizing radiation or bioengineering. However, food manufacturers can use pesticides in organic foods if they are derived from a natural source... Don't confuse it with terms such as 'hormone-free' or 'natural' as these food labelling terms are not regulated by law. 
     The US department of Agriculture (USDA) has created an organic seal and foods bearing the seal need to be harvested, grown and processed according to national standards that include restrictions on amounts of hormones, pesticide residue and antibiotics. 
     The statements used to define 'organic' from the regulation authorities are, in my opinion, a bit long winded and ambiguous, so a good basic definition of the term is that it is food which should be grown without genetic modification and should not contain any synthetic pesticides or artificial additives.
     So let's talk about pesticides and fertilizer... one of the biggest misconceptions of organic farming is that they do not use fertilizer, herbicides or pesticides. 
     This is not the case and even organic foods have some form of fertilizer and pesticides on it. Fertilizer is essentially a chemical nutrient and the organic version of fertilizer delivers exactly the same chemical load as the synthetic. 
     Plant fertilizers consist of the same three elements: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and these three elements are used both in organic and ordinary farming.
     Measuring fertilizer and pesticide levels is all well and good, but is organic REALLY healthier? The Quality Low Input Food (QLIF) organisation conducted a five year study on this topic and concluded that food grown organically generally has a higher level of nutrients contained within it, to food grown in a conventional manner. 
    Also they found that organic foods contain less 'bad' levels of pesticides but the QLIF realise that more studies need to be conducted before any conclusive evidence can be found. 
    They concluded that 'further and more detailed studies are required to provide proof for positive health impacts of the organic diets on human and animal health'.
    However, in complete contrast to this, a study conducted in 2007 by Newcastle University in the UK reported that organic produce had up to 40 percent higher levels of some nutrients (Vitamin C, Iron and Zinc), than conventional foods do.
     In addition to this, a study was conducted in 2003 by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that organically grown corn and berries contained 58 percent more antioxidants which are known to help prevent heart disease, with up to 52 percent higher levels of Vitamin C than those that are conventionally grown.
    People who buy organic are for the most part seeking assurance that food production is healthier, safer, purer and more natural. It should also has less impact on the plants or animals that are being reared organically. 
    But are organic foods really worth the expense? Is it really better to go organic? Marian Nestle PHD, a Professor from New York University states ' If you can afford them, buy them.' She goes on to say 'it really is a personal choice but how can anyone that substances such as pesticides, capable of killing insects, can be good for you?' 
    In contrast to this Keecha Harris, spokeswoman of the American Diabetic Association states that there is little to no evidence that organic foods are superior to traditional foods.
    She goes on to say that food does not have to be organic to be safe and environmentally friendly and recommends that people focus on eating food close to where they live, rather than whether it was organically farmed or not. Ms Harris states that food may be organic but if it has been trekked over from half way across the world, it leaves a much bigger carbon footprint, whereas if people buy foods from the local farmers market, whether it is organic or not, it will be farm fresh, thereby having a lot less impact on the environment at large.
    So what does all this tell us? Well it tell me that not even the so called 'experts' can agree on whether or not to go organic. 
    One thing they do seem to agree on though is whether you buy organically, locally or conventionally, it is important to have lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Many people just simply can't afford to buy all organic foods so what is important is to have a healthy diet packed with fruits and vegetables, always remember to thoroughly wash your fruits and veggies before using them as this will also help get off any residue of pesticides or fertilizers, but overall... the health benefits of eating healthy foods generally outweigh the pesticide negatives.

Why This Scoffer of Organic Food Myths Drinks Only Organic Coffee


       I am one of "those People" who has never bought into the mythology surrounding organic goods as being the end-all, be-all of human health and wellbeing. 
      The exhaustive studies published by Stanford University have more recently borne out my initial disdain for the fad craze of supposedly natural foods which it turns out are no better or worse than those produced by the standard methods.
      So that being said, why would a guy like me refuse to drink any but Organic coffee? It's based on a personal discovery that very nearly killed my wife some 6 years back in a freak incident that baffled Doctors for about a month until they uncovered the answer.
       Let me back up a bit here and start this from the beginning in order to allow you to appreciate the full impact:
      My wife runs her own Bookkeeping business and while that in and of itself is not remarkable, (though she is indeed remarkable herself) anyone who has or does work in any accounting capacity knows that about this time of year, (late November) small businesses start getting frantic about their books and start finding someone to clean them up since they've been lying about forgotten most of the year and tax time is right around the corner. 
       So having a thriving business, my wife finds herself working 12-15 hour days from now until about February, where she finishes up just before burning out into a pile of (metaphorical) ash from exhaustion. So her constant companion at the time was a Starbucks (I don't speak Coffee and never will thank-you-very-much) large white chocolate mocha. 
       In fact, it was doubly stressful since I worked days at a Vegas Casino and our second child was still sitting by her side in a bassinet. At least she had the devoted assistance of our 3 year old daughter to help out... (yes, she just rolled her eyes and groaned out loud at the memory) So, to sum up: Two kids, busy work (at home thankfully), more work piling on by the day leads her to suck down some 5-7 cups of Starbucks each day just to keep up.
       Not exactly the recommended lifestyle choices, but for a driven woman who wants a home life as well, it's the cards that were on the table at the time.
      So on comes the coffee; which she hates by the way... I know it sounds counter intuitive, but energy drinks were the exception, not the rule back then, so she dutifully downed her coffee and moved about her days keeping pace with life and work, when one day she noticed that her feet began to show signs of swelling.
      OK, not that unusual we thought, so it did not alarm her overmuch until she began to get mood swings, and her stomach began to grow, and she began to get sick in the mornings. 
      OK, yes we thought exactly what you are thinking now.
      A month of this and her stomach had grown even larger and solid as a rock. Now I'm not always as astute a husband as I could be, so I thought this would be the perfect time to make pregnancy jokes; which I soon found out was not the wisest of choices; Boy was she ever angry with me, especially since she had decided after our second child that she would not go through that again: Ever. A few household items even hit the wall a time or too...
     The Doctors could not identify what was happening to her and could not explain her condition, especially after my wife explained to them that she had panicked and bought twelve pregnancy tests and all of them said she was not pregnant. They went through blood tests and other tests over the next 4-5 weeks until finally one of the tests came back with an answer.
 Coffee.
      The coffee she was drinking so avidly was the cause of her false pregnancy signs. It had caused all of her internal organs to retain massive amounts of water and were on the verge of shutting down completely because of it. I can't even begin to imagine how large they must have grown to send her belly out to 7-months pregnant size, but taking her precious coffee away for good did the trick and over the next three weeks, everything went back down to normal.
     So why coffee? Well, it turns out that Starbucks, (and nearly all other brands by the way) gets their coffee from producers that use a shortcut during the roasting process: They spray a chemical compound very similar in composition to insecticides onto their coffee beans in order to speed up the roasting process and no, they can't ever wash it out because it bakes into the beans themselves during the roasting process for all of us to enjoy.
     It was a high concentration of that particular poison that had affected my wife's health in such a dramatic fashion, and by simply switching to an organic coffee, all of those symptoms went away quite rapidly.
     I'm sure you can understand why, since that day, I have never bought another cup of non-organic coffee, nor will I any time soon, because as long as it is financially beneficial to them, coffee growers will continue to poison their coffee as long as they can to save a few days and squeeze in one more batch of beans for the season.
    Just my view from the cheep seats...
